Transportation 

There are different ways to get to Bagan from Yangon

Flights

All 9 domestic flight carrier in Myanmar offers flights on this route. The earliest flight starts at 6.30am and the latest is around 10.00am.
There is no flight in the afternoon. Basically, you may have to get up early to take the flight.
This transfer takes about 1h20 and so far it is the most comfortable method.

Bus 

The frequency of bus is high than any other mean of transportation for this route. Travelers have plenty of choice ranging from day bus to overnight bus with soft seat of hard sleeper standard. 
Morning bus starts around 8.00am while the latest evening bus kicks off about 22.00pm. The whole journey takes about 8 hours.
Please note that the bus stations are located out of the city, you need to take a taxi to these station. 

Train

It is no doubt that the train travel from Yangon to Bagan is very scenic yet it is not so comfortable since the rail system of Myanmar is still backward. Tourist have to buy first class seat or sleeper tickets. 
The train Yangon - Bagan is an overnight train with one stop at Paya - a very nice place to spot Pyu Heritages ( for your reference ! ), departure time 16:00 and arriving around 10.30am. The ride is very scenic.

Bagan is studded by over 2,500 temples and pagodas so cultural activities like pagoda visit is the first thing we should mention. We suggest you to spend at least 2 days to scan at least the highlights of the area.
